More Amethyst Lore
Often amethyst is given as a symbol of sincerity, security, and peace of
mind.
Leonardo Da Vinci wrote that amethyst was able to dissipate evil
thoughts and quicken the intelligence (it obviously worked pretty well
for him!)
The name comes from the Greek amethystos meaning "without
wine." The ancients thought that amethyst could prevent
drunkenness. Goblets were made of amethyst so that one could imbibe
endlessly without fear of intoxication. The gemstone still symbolizes
sobriety.
Amethyst is the US State Gemstone of South Carolina and Canadian
Province Gemstone of Ontario, Canada
