Garnet is a reasonably priced stone. It is beautiful in rings, pendants, necklaces and bracelets. It is much less expensive than pink tourmaline or ruby.

General Information

Garnet comes in a variety of colours except blue, but is often thought of as only red. Garnet is not a single mineral, but a group of minerals closely related in physical and chemical properties. The individual minerals of the garnet group are called "garnets" The six types of garnet used as gems are:

Pyrope
Almandine
Spessartine
Grossular
Andradite
Uvarovite

Clean garnet with a dry soft cloth. As with all gemstones, care should be taken to protect it from scratches, sharp blows, harsh chemicals and extreme temperatures.

Garnet is found in Africa, Brazil, Canada, India, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and the USA (Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Virginia).
