Editor, The Record:
I am writing to express my displeasure with the headline "Apartment 'pawn shop' searched" in your July 16 edition of The Record.
The story concerned an apartment full of stolen goods which was raided by the local police.
The crux of the matter is that the most important function of a pawnbroker is to make small short term loans to individuals using personal property as collateral.
Plainly, the apartment dwellers in this case were operating as 'second-hand dealers' and not as pawnbrokers.
By using the erroneous headline, you are perpetuating the 1950s Hollywood myth that there is a linkage between pawnbrokers and stolen property.
This is not the case and your headline is an affront to all pawnbrokers, who are among the most regulated of businesses.
For your information, all pawnbrokers and second-hand dealers are required to obtain government issued photo id from every customer and report every incoming item within 24 hours to the local police department.
The criminal element knows this and avoids these types of businesses because they know there will be a paper trail and they will be caught.
